Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) also known as spastic colon, intestinal neurosis or mucous colitis is one of the most common digestive disturbances seen by health care practitioners.

In a healthy digestive system the normal movement of the intestines is caused by the alternate contraction and relaxation of the intestinal muscles. This moves food and waste through the system. When this is disrupted the system becomes less rhythmic and more uncoordinated. Toxins and waste build up and IBS is usually the end result.

Changing your eating habits is a key factor in fighting this ailment. Never have the words “food is medicine” been more true. Products to avoid are those, which are hard pressed to be classified as food in the real sense of the meaning. Chemical-laced highly refined pseudo-foods are filled with artificial flavourants, colourants and preservatives. Flavourants and colourants are chemicals pumped into food to make it look and taste better. Chemicals are toxins.

Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeast.

Activia, can relief bloating in some IBS suffers and have little or no effect on those who are lactose intolerance. Since Activia is a yoghurt, it would make bloating and constipation worse. We all know  everyones IBS is different, so treatment options are different.

Tips for the day

  • Eat only small potions several times a day (a fistful)
  • Chew food thoroughly
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat plenty of fruits but avoid acidic fruits such as orange juice (GERD)
  • Exercise daily to relieve stress

Irritable bowel syndrome, also called IBS, is a gastric disorder.  It is usually diagnosed when a multitude of tests show negative results.  These tests can include x-rays, blood tests, stool samples, and a colonoscopy.  Just like a lot of other disorders, IBS is diagnosed for lack of evidence of serious illnesses, like cancer.  The symptoms of IBS can also mimic those of other problems, like stomach flu and ulcerative colitis.  Unlike a viral infection, the symptoms of IBS don’t go away.

While the combination of IBS characteristics can differ from person to person, a lot of them overlap.  Some of these symptoms are: abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.

Women are more often afflicted by certain illnesses than men, including such problems as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Inflammation is a key problem in many of these disorders, so when a “new” health supplement product appears on the market claiming to treat the many related ailments it is cause for some investigation, if not outright celebration.

One of the latest health supplement discoveries, drawing on ancient remedies from Southeast Asia, is the Mangosteen fruit. An extremely potent source of antioxidants, many people have found that drinking this juice has helped them successfully stop taking a host of other medications for pain, inflammation, fatigue, depression, and more.
