Info About Endometriosis You Should Know by Shelley Ross
Endometriosis is a condition that can easily cause problems in a woman’s life and can have far reaching effects beyond the physical symptoms that is causes. As the cause of this condition is still largely unknown, any menstruating women can be diagnosed with endometriosis. Here is some info about endometriosis that you might find helpful in understanding what’s going on.
How Endometriosis Occurs:
Women during their reproductive years, usually between 25 and 40 years of age, are most vulnerable to having endometriosis. However, there are documented cases of affected individuals suffering from the condition as early as 11 years of age.
Endometriosis occurs when endometrial cells start growing outside the uterus. When this happens, the uterus and other parts of a woman’s reproductive system like the fallopian tube and the vagina can suffer from lesions and scars.
Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis:
The first sign of endometriosis is usually pain, particularly in the pelvic or abdominal area. The pain worsens before and during menstruation, but usually decreases when a woman’s monthly cycle reaches its end. Although for some women it never disappears entirely. Even a woman’s urine may have blood mixed with it if she’s suffering from endometriosis.
Gastrointestinal problems such as constipation or diarrhea are also possible symptoms of endometriosis. This is because endometrial implants or growths can also develop near the intestines and other digestive organs of the body.
Dizziness, vomiting and fatigue are other symptoms of endometriosis. These happen because the pain caused by external endometrial cells may circulate in the body through the nerves and bloodstream.
One of the worst symptoms of endometriosis is infertility. The rarest on the other hand is pain on the chest. When endometrial growths, scars, implants or lesions appear in the lungs, a woman may start coughing up blood. Endometrial implants on the brain may lead to headaches and even seizures, although this is very rare.
Treatment for Endometriosis:
Keep in mind that while there is still no known cure for endometriosis, there are natural and medical treatments you can use to help you manage your condition more effectively.
Painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications are adequate if pain is the only troubling symptom you’re dealing with. Make sure however that you take them only when necessary, or your body will grow immune to the effect of the medication.
You can also take medication that helps in reducing or stopping the production of estrogen and progesterone in your body. These two substances are what cause you to menstruate every month. Without menstruation, you can eliminate the signs and symptoms of endometriosis. The easiest way to do this is by taking birth control pills. Speak to your doctor for more information.
Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist or GnRH works by decreasing the production of two particular hormones, LH and FSH, both of which are responsible for the presence of progesterone and estrogen in your body.
In choosing medications, however, just make sure that none of it contains xenoestrogens or anything that promotes the growth of estrogen and progesterone in your body. Birth pills have also been found effective in treating endometriosis since they work by suppressing growth of estrogen and progesterone levels in a woman’s body as well.
Lastly, herbal remedies and even massages have also proven effective in some cases, but stronger evidence is required to support this.
