Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment: Paroxetine and IBS

Paroxetine(Seroxat, Paxil) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)
 

Paxil is an agent in a newer class of antidepressant medication known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Depression and anxiety disorders might be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. One of these chemicals is serotonin, which helps send electrical signals from one nerve cell to another. In the process, serotonin is released from one nerve cell (the sender) and travels to the next (the receiver), where it is either absorbed or returns back to the original sender cell.

In a Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled studies, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that the drug relieved some syndromes of IBS and improved the well-being of group with IBS.

Pain in Women

This new research looks at the differences in how men and women experience pain.

 Dr. Peckman advised. “Hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, profoundly affect the central nervous system, which is responsible for perceiving and transmitting the sensation of pain. This may help to explain why conditions such as osteoarthritis, headaches, and irritable bowel syndrome strike women at higher rates than men.”

“Women are also more prone to conditions involving the immune system. There are a host of diseases thought to result in part from an over-reactive immune system, such as celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and many types of pelvic pain.
